Photographs of gentlemen practising the martial art of Bartitsu. Edward William Barton-Wright was an Englishman who had spent several years living in Japan where he studied jiujitsu. On his return to England in the late 1890s he wrote several articles on a new form of self defence which he had developed from a mixture of Asian martial arts and British fighting styles such as boxing and stick fighting. Barton named this new style after himself and set up a Bartitsu training school in London.
Its popularity soon grew and gentlemen began to take Bartitsu lessons in how to defend themselves in the hazardous streets of the capital. They were taught how to use objects they carried with them such as umbrellas, canes, hats and coats to overcome an attacker. Though its popularity diminished quite quickly the form was immortalised by Arthur Conan Doyle when he made a (misspelled) reference to it in his Sherlock Holmes story ‘The Adventure of the Empty House’. In it Sherlock Holmes reveals to Dr Watson that he survived his encounter with Professor Moriarty at The Reichenbach Falls through his “knowledge of baritsu”.

私は「小説の神さまが降りてくる」タイプの物書きではない。デビュー前の数年、ほとんど「小説」の体を為したものは書けなかった。書けてもプロットの必要ないショートショート程度の長さのもの。それ以上の長さにするにはどうしたら良いのか解らない。白い原稿用紙、一行も書かれていないワープロ画面を前に途方に暮れるばかり。月日が経ち、私は自分が「小説を書けない人」ではないかと思い始めていた。けれどやはり自分のアイディアを小説の形にしたかった。アイディアだけはたくさんあったからだ。
幾ら待っても小説の神さまが来ないのなら、自分から探しに行こうと思った。
何をしたかというと、積み木を積むようにひとつずつ小説の要素を積み重ねてプロットを作ってみることにしたのだ。
まずテーマ。それからそのテーマに向いたキャラクター。必要とされる舞台。小道具。テーマは全体として提示すべきことであるが、章ごとにその章で提示すべきことを決めて行く。そしてどういう終わりにしたいか決める。用意した要素を積み重ねながらそのラストに向かう道筋を探した。演繹と帰納をいっぺんにやるような感じである。そうすると全体の長さに対してストーリーを割り振ることが出来るようになった。
中長編のプロットを建てられるようになったのである。
実質的なデビュー作となった「裏庭で影がまどろむ昼下がり」はこの手法を始めた頃に書いたもの。最初に決めたテーマは「どんな人間にも愛される価値がある」だった。
このテーマに必要なキャラクターとしてテル・ラナクルズが設定された。犯罪王になることを夢見てボスのコカインをくすねる性悪なガキである。この悪ガキを100％愛してくれるのはいったい何者か？ という自問への答えが、ブロラハンのハーパーだった。人間なら誰でも無条件に愛さずにいられない寂しいモンスターである。この二人を設定したとき、物語はもう出来たも同然だった。私はそれを「キャラクターが内包する物語」と呼んでいる。テーマに適したキャラクターを設定することによって、ほんの少し小説の神は私に微笑んでくれたのだ。
プロで仕事するようになって十年が過ぎ、今では必ずしもこの手法でプロットを作っている訳ではないが、迷った時には初心に立ち返るようにしている。小説の神さまはなかなか微笑んではくれないものなのである。

These wonderful Vintage Sci-Fi Star Wars pictures were edited by Terry Fan, a canadian creative.
‘To me art is a multi-faceted thing’ says Terry ‘and I’m currently involved in a number of creative pursuits which include tee-shirt design, screenwriting, graphic novels and children’s book illustration.’
If you are a die-hard fan of the popular space-saga well, these picture are something new. Aretro atmpshere, the most representative Star Wars Characters..and the job is done.

This gorgeous necklace is made out of a 19th century fusee’ watch balance, a 3cm AA quality round cut Mozambique garnet with one stainless steel gear and two antique watch hands, one round brilliant cut diamond, .025 carat, clarity SI1 on an 18-inch gold chain necklace.
The fusee watches are amazing works of art, some of the last key-wound pocket watches that were made around the turn of the 20th century. This particular watch balance was shipped to me from England, where this style of watch is easiest to find anymore (but frightfully expensive). Many of the fusee watches are very simple, with clean lines, and the only luxurious little flourish to be found is this balance, on the back of the watch, hidden in the case. Every fusee watch balance I’ve seen in this style sports a little old man’s face (or a cherub, or a gremlin, depending on who is looking at it), with a small amount of drilled holes for screws used to mount the balance to the rest of the watch.This piece has been sold, but I have several more of these to use.
